On this first recording of mine as a leader, I am joined by Trevor Dunn on bass and Elliot Humberto Kavee on drums and cello. I have been familiar with the music of these men for some time and I was very eager to work with them. Individually they are two of the finest musicians I know and in tandem they form one of the most interesting and exciting rhythm sections around. These were the people I wanted with me to help express my music and I felt lucky to have them.
Throughout this project I tried to direct the musicians as little as possible. I wanted them to have the freedom to express themselves and to not be extensions of myself. It is far more interesting to me to observe how different people interpret my compositions when given the opportunity, as opposed to having me dictate their every move. These are not revolutionary ideas, but I feel that one should adhere to any philosophy that allows for greater positive self-expression and individuality.
